BIOGRAPHY

Roger Cantu is a teacher of meditation and self-discovery. He is the Director of the Meditation Club and Author of several books on meditation.


1962    Roger’s father has a strange dream in which he has a son with a third eye and thousands of people from all over the world will come seeking his blessing. The next day, he finds out that his wife is pregnant.

1962    Roger is born a triple Capricorn. Sun position is 6 deg. 15 min. Moon position is 24 deg. 45 min. Mercury position is 23 deg. 54 min.

1972    While attending Catholic school, Roger checks out his first book out of the school library – Siddharta by Hermann Hesse. This book introduces him to the world of Buddhism and spirituality.

1979    Roger studies Silva Mind Control with Laura and Jose Silva.

1980    Roger meets El Capitan Andres Segura, a Conchero dancer and medicine man from central Mexico. Segura introduces him to the books by Carlos Castaneda.

1980    After becoming more interested in the Native American movement, Roger meets Tigre Perez, who introduces him to the world of power.

1981    Roger moves to California.

1983    Roger becomes a student of Rama, Dr. Frederick Lenz - the author of the best-selling books; Surfing the Himalayas and Snowboarding to Nirvana.

1989    Roger graduates with a B.A. in Psychology from Chapman University. He specializes in psychological research and biofeedback under the supervision of Dr. Steve Chandler.

1990    Roger graduates with a technical degree in Computer Systems and Programming from CLC.

1990    Roger goes on hiatus from studying with Rama.

1991    Roger becomes the Associate Director of the California Self-Help Center at the UCLA Psychology Department.

1992    Under the guidance of Rama, Roger becomes the organizer of the Meditation Club at UCLA and starts studying with Rama again.

1993    Roger spends six months attending Marianne Williamson’s weekly meetings on A Course of Miracles. Marianne is the author of A Return to Love.

1994    Roger moves to Arlington, Texas. He starts teaching weekly meditation classes at the University of Texas at Arlington.

1995    Roger travels to India during the summer. He meets Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba - the great spiritual leader of India. This trip becomes the basis for the book Journey to India.

1997    Roger graduates with a B.A. in English with a minor in Photography from the University of Texas at Arlington.

1997    Roger spends a week at the Naropa Institute during the “Spirituality in Education” conference with the Dalai Lama. Roger has an audience with the Dalai Lama.

1998    Roger goes through the “Mind of Enlightenment” initiation with the Dalai Lama in Atlanta, GA.

1999    Roger participates in the Kalachakra initiation with the Dalai Lama in Bloomington, Indiana.

1999    Roger moves to Houston, Texas, and starts teaching weekly meditation seminars at the University of Houston. 

1999    Roger meets Lama Ole Nydahl of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. Roger takes refuge and receives the dharma name Karma Changchub Dorje - “Diamond of Enlightenment.”

2000    Roger continues teaching in Houston and starts teaching bi-monthly seminars in Los Angeles, California.

2000    During the summer, Roger attends the Phowa ceremony with Lama Ole at Karma Guen in Velez-Malaga, Spain. After completing Phowa, Roger takes the Bodhisattva's vows. The essence of Buddhism is the Bodhisattva's way of life – meaning that every action is motivated by the wish to attain full enlightenment for the sake of all beings. Enlightenment is obtained through the practice the six liberating actions: generosity and self-less giving, living meaningfully and for the benefit of others, patience not to lose future happiness through anger, effort to insure inner growth, meditation and concentration practice, and gaining wisdom by recognizing the true nature of mind. The day after Phowa, Roger receives the White Tara empowerment from His Holiness the 17th Karmapa. The next day he receives the following initiations: Garuda, Channa Dorje, and Hayagriva from Lopon Tsechu Rinpoche. During the final day at Karma Guen, he also receives the 16th Karmapa empowerment.

2000    Roger receives the Mahamudra teachings from Lama Ole Nydahl in Austin, Texas.

2001    Roger attends a very powerful Buddhist Teachers Conference at the San Francisco Center for Expanded Awareness. 

2001    Roger moves to Los Angeles, California to organize the LA Meditation Center.

2001    Roger starts offering weekly classes in Westwood, CA.

2002    Roger meets His Eminence Khenpo Choga Rinpoche - the 33rd Holder of the Dzogchen Lineage. Khenpo holds a private meditation at his residence.

2002    May 25th. Roger and Melody get married in Flint, MI.

2003    The Los Angeles Meditation Center opens a center location in West Los Angeles.

2003    Roger and Melody move to Santa Clarita in July.

2003    Roger and Melody have a daughter. Her name is Padma Kamala Cantu. She received her name from Khenpo Choga, and was initiated into Buddhism at age - 2 weeks.

2005    Roger moves to San Antonio, Texas.

2007    Roger starts teaching bi-monthly classes by organizing the Meditation Club Meetup.

2007    Roger attends the Buddhist Leadership Conference sponsored by the Frederick Lenz Foundation. He gets inspired to do three things. 1. Redesign the Pathways 2 Enlightenment website and focus it on American Buddhism. 2. Open the American Buddhism Publishing House (currently in the works). 3. Establish an American Buddhism Study Center in San Antonio (near future).
